The short version
Butterstick helps you decide what to watch. To do that we store your watchlist, learn which streaming services you use, and — if you turn them on — send you notifications when titles you've saved make news. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and you can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app at any time.
What we collect
Account information. When you sign in, Firebase Authentication (Google) collects your email address and, if you use Sign in with Apple, the name and email Apple shares — including Apple's relay address if you chose to hide your real one. We do not ask for a username. You can browse and search Butterstick without an account; in that case none of this is collected.
Your activity in the app.Your saved watchlist, titles you've marked as seen, personal notes you attach to titles, snoozes, follows, and preferences (like which streaming services you use). Stored in Google Firebase (Firestore), associated with your account.
Push notification tokens. If you enable notifications, your device's push token is stored so we can deliver alerts about titles you've saved. Turning notifications off in Settings deletes these tokens.
Usage analytics. We use PostHog to understand how features are used — events like "article opened" or "title saved," associated with your account ID (not your email). This helps us decide what to build next.
Subscription status. If you subscribe to Butter, Apple handles the payment — we never see your card, your billing address or your Apple ID. Apple gives us a signed receipt, and we store the transaction identifier from it, whether the subscription is active, and when it renews or lapses, so the app knows to lift the free queue limit.
Search and browsing queries. When you browse or search titles, those queries are sent to The Movie Database (TMDB) through our servers to fetch results. They are not stored with your identity.
What we don't do
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We do not show third-party advertising. We do not use your data to train AI models. We do not access your contacts, photos, location, or microphone.
Who processes your data
Butterstick runs on a small set of service providers, each processing only what their role requires: Google Firebase (sign-in, database, notifications infrastructure and server functions), Apple (subscription billing and receipt verification), PostHog (product analytics), Vercel (web hosting), and TMDB with availability data from JustWatch (movie and TV metadata; this product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB).
Retention and deletion
Your data is kept while your account is active. You can delete your account from You → Account → Delete account inside the app — this permanently removes your profile, your queue, your watched history, your preferences and your push tokens. Deleting your account does not cancel an active subscription; cancel that in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
Children
Butterstick is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes and contact
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the effective date above and note the change in the app. Questions, concerns, or data requests: hello@butterstick.net.
